Garden Review – July 17-23

July 24, 2011

In a few short hours I’m officially on vacation and headed out of town for a few days.  Woohoo!  I sure hope the garden survives my absence…Tyler is in charge.

Here’s this past week’s garden review. The garden keeps chugging along!

Week of July 17-23

The crazy heat wave continued for most of the week, fortunately we were lucky enough to be in the path of a couple pop-up thunderstorms and even got over an inch of rain one night.  The one evening it cooled down almost felt chilly even though it was still in the low 80s.  Guess I’ve gotten accustomed to this heat.

harvesting red onions

It was a good week in the garden with some large harvests and much need cleanup happening.

  • One small sack of green beans
  • All remaining onions – a total of 81
  • Remaining red potatoes – right around 5lbs
  • 4 zucchini
  • 3 eggplants – continue to be such tiny little things
  • Few cherry tomatoes
  • Herbs – rosemary, thyme, oregano, mint, tarragon

This was my best year for onions yet.  The reds a little small, but yellows are nice large globes.  Love getting a big crop to hang in the basement for the fall/winter.

Garden Notables

  • One heirloom tomato was starting to blush, but also rot so it got tossed
  • Zucchini losing the battle with squash bugs, cucumber beetle and now vine borers
  • Melons growing very well
  • Still not much fruit set on peppers, sweet banana pepper doing well though
  • Green beans pretty sparse production now
  • Second round of lettuce handled heat well, bitter flavor though
  • Cherry tomato plant trying to dominate entire garden
  • Asiatic lily blooming

My one and only watermelon so far, compared to about a dozen muskmelon.  Can’t wait until this guy is ready.

The full view…starting to get empty, huh?
